Pop Cultural Moment: Firefly Movie!
Via Slashdot - Fox didn't give the series a chance, but Universal bought the movie rights and Whedon is going to try and make a <http://hollywoodreporter.com/thr/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1969026">big screen version. It really was such an excellent little show, and got cancelled just as they were started to develop their first substantial story arc.
I just hope that Firefly: The Movie is not as crap as Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Movie. The latter put me off the series for years - I didn't discover it until D. became addicted and foisted it upon me!

That said, I don't know anything about Firefly. Never seen or heard of. So at least when you post about it, I won't come in and try to tell you what's what on your journal. :)

And yes, they did start the tv Buffy out as rather "fluffy", but I argue that the series was superior in several ways, if only because the writing was tight, the acting was very good, and the characters actually DEVELOPED (of course, it's easier to develop characters if you have several seasons instead of 2 hours)!
I have no problem with edgy/campy - hell, I LOVE Lexx - but we'll have to agree to disagree on this one!

Re: in the same neck of the woods (can't find your original comment) - indeed we are! You ever compete against the Chevy Chase folks?

Yes, I fence epee (see icon) mostly, on a rare occasion foil and even rarer sabre. I sort-of know Mark H., Theodore P., Jasmine C. -- the epee fencers mostly. I sort of know a couple of the foil fencers, but only peripherally.
When are you going to start doing tournaments? I'll have to look for you when you do.

Re: "when" am I going to start competing? :P Funny everyone says it like that, when I only started fencing to improve my speed/balance/coordination!
Seriously - I don't know. My coach and some of my fencing buddies have asked the same question, and while I don't think I'm that good I don't completely rule out the idea of tournaments. At some point I might like to participate in a formal competition just to see how well I do against my peers. For now it's on indefinite standby due to economic constraints.
