After last weekend's adventures in poor food choices, I did a bit of reading up on competitive pre-loading and nutrition and general and have been making a concerted effort to improve my diet.

Some of the pre-game eating advice I saw repeatedly was not to eat anything new or novel right before a competition, so I've been readjusting my stomach by noshing on fruit when I want a quick snack (as opposed to, say, hot chocolate, doughnuts, muffins, or snack machine food).

[livejournal.com profile] dotheranon commented that I'm treating eating fruit like it's a chore, and while it's not that awful, it's true trying to make a habit out of something that currently isn't involves (for me) treating it less like food and more like medicine :P

And it is working - I felt a little hungry last night after dinner and instead of automatically choosing chocolate, I went for a banana.

However, I am also starting to see how adding more fruits/veg makes me want to eat 5-6 little meals a day - they're better for me but MAN do they burn up quick!

Short version: my point control sucks, and my hand parries are almost non existent.

Long version: went to the Not-So-Local SCA fighter practice tonight, simply because I haven't fenced all week and I tend to get antsy if I go more than a few days without a fight :P I was dismayed to find just how hard it was for me to get a good, solid touch with my rapier.

Mind, when I "found" my opponents blade correctly, I was solid because I could "ride" their blade home and it didn't require as much strength. Disengaging (pardon, cavazioneing)... well, I just don't have the strength for it.

The marshal gave me a good workout - even across disciplines some basics always hold, and actually landing a solid touch on one's opponent is one of them. I worked out some of my inner grouch, at least.

One lament - why on earth aren't breast protectors for women required in the SCA, why, why?? Just those two hubcaps can make the difference between a mouse and a lioness!

Short conclusion: that I need to do more rapier. The best practice for fencing is more of it.
