feint praise
Jan. 11th, 2008 08:36 pmMy latest lesson (and, it seems, V.'s latest thing generally) is emphasizing feint attacks (now with video!) as part of strategy. They're a good way to put your opponent on the defensive, or at least scare him enough to mess up.
I'm glad we're covering this because I'm terrible about not mixing up my game when my opponent starts to see through my strategy - I'm not irretrievably stupid but my offensive game is poor so when I'm forced to do something I often don't know when to pick my moment.
The moment is apparently when the opponent is trying to draw an attack so they can counterattack (I see this a lot) - keep a parry on standby to get back right of way. Or when just close enough for it to look like the real thing and provoke a response. Or just to mess with the opponent.
He also instructed me on the value of not "throwing" my arm or leaning forward (a very old bugbear, this one)when I lunge because it slows me down and can telegraph my intentions to my opponent. I realized that I'm not that confident with awareness of distance and that lean is compensation when I'm not sure I'm in range.
He also encouraged me to lunge with a bit of a slide on my back foot..... Houston, we do not have liftoff :P I like my solid footing, dammit! Though I am a bit bouncier since I got the Enell.
This is going to take a lot of work </zorro> :P
