bread or cake
Sep. 13th, 2007 11:09 pmI went back to fencing today. "Back" is an overstatement, but I've grown so accustomed to Sunday fencing (foil, rapier, or otherwise) that skipping one day makes me feel like I've taken a break :P
I also took a lesson, and learned about the importance of making wider parries (contrary to my early training, but essential for fighting in close quarters) and worked on my offensive game, particularly feint-parrying my opponent's feints and using feint-counterattacks to draw an attack, which I can then parry and riposte.
The latter is frustrating as hell, because badly timed counterattacks are actually a bad habit of mine so it's a bit of a learning curve to figure out when it's good to use them. Thus far it seems like they're only good in "Indiana Jones" situations - if my opponent keeps feinting without getting down to business, get 'em - but I'm very uncomfortable fighting in close quarters. This is going to take some work.
Coach V. said "Fencing can be bread or cake", i.e., it can be basic but boring or fun and challenging. It takes some work to turn it into cake, but also some relaxation too - I'm glad I took last Sunday off, as it was starting to feel a bit bready :P
I've got some correspondence to catch up on, but it's gotta wait 'til tomorrow - I'm beat!
