anotheranon: (costume)
hallomeme, gacked from I can't remember where/who )

It is a sad but true thing that even though I'm a costume nut, I don't have that many costumes - they just take so long to make! If I have occasion to dress up this year I will likely wear (again) the Farscape duster because it reads as either "Farscape"'s Aeryn Sun or the "Matrix"'s (Matrices?) Trinity, depending on the audience's awareness of sci-fi media :P

I don't remember many of my childhood costumes, though my mom told me once that I started planning them in the summer :P A few stand out, if only because I've seen pictures of them:

  • an Indian (Native American) costume my mom made out of tan sueded polyester (possibly not originally for Halloween, but got repurposed). Thinking back on how tiny the beads were and the hand-cut fringe, she must have worked hard on it.
  • A Cowardly Lion costume made with the same tan material, plus dark brown for the mane and paws (strange that I still remember how the fabric felt more than anything else). I have long since surpassed my mom's sewing skills, but she was and is fantastic at getting the most out of her yardage :)
  • doG help me, a cheerleader (I don't remember it, but I've seen the pictures) Green and white, complete with [shudder] pom poms....at least I can truly say it was Come As You Aren't :P
  • I think my first one was Little Red Riding Hood. I've seen pictures of me in it when I was very small, a simple red hooded cape. I think my sister "inherited" it for her first Halloween.
  • my last childhood trick or treating (age 13? 14?) I was a goth. Because, at the time I was... a goth/punk/indie kid. It was the costume of least effort :P
  • A "rave toy" one year (as an adult) when I deliberately wore all white with sparkly makeup, just to not be wearing black :P
  • I wore my fencing gear a couple of years back (again, a costume of least resistance). I thought about using the mask as a candy bowl but considering how much I sweat in the thing... ewww :P

What about y'all? Anyone dressing up this year? What were your favorite childhood costumes (or, at least, the ones you remember most)?

The temperature stayed below 50F for the first time today. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, but I was reminded of the winter "artifacts" that are so easy to forget during the warmer months but that become progressively more annoying as they keep going on and on through the winter:
  • Hands so cold that I have difficulty sewing because I can't feel what I'm doing
  • Dry skin, particularly the extremities, leading to the "lizard shedding skin" feeling [ick!]
  • soreness resulting from curling into progressively tinier balls in my sleep to stay warm
  • Heavier, bulky clothing that makes me feel like the Michelin man :P

On top of this, my eyes are itching like crazy!! Isn't everything pollinating supposed to be dead already??
