Saturday:

Got up semi-early to go down to the DAR museum for a Jane Austen movie-oriented lecture/"petting zoo" (i.e., getting to handle actual period garments).

I enjoyed it! I learned a few of the little nuances of telling the styles of the different time increments apart (a lot of style changes between 1798 and 1800 and slower changes every 5 years to around 1815 or so). There were numerous rare items with ghooooorgeous details, including a rare beaded mesh overdress (beads weren't popular in this time period, and the fragility of the gown makes it a wonder it survived at all).

What really impressed me were the linen chemises and shirts. Even 200 years on, it's wonderful quality linen - light, but tightly, smoothly woven so it's not sheer. Assembled with tiny, perfectly spaced stitches and every raw edge turned under - my machine doesn't do work like that! Needless to say I now ache for expensive handkerchief linen and the ability to do tiny, fine hand-sewing. One day, one day...

Afterwards went out with some of the local ICG people for sandwiches and chat. It was a beautiful day but I was a bit worn out after getting up before 10 on a weekend, so I went home to read and do other odds and ends around the house.

Turns out I enjoyed the best part of the day - by the time I woke up from my reading-induced nap it was storming. D. and I watched "Moulin Rouge" again, inspired by the Toulouse-Lautrec exhibit. We'd forgotten just how GOOD it was!

Today: Got up again before 10 for coffee with friends. Small gathering but good because I could keep up a bit better with conversation. As ever, interesting people and conversation goes a long way towards waking me up (to be fair, the 2 cups of Mayorga brew also had something to do with it :P)

Cooked chickpea stew with the leftover lamb for dinner - it looks like I've finally found a cookbook that has healthy recipes that don't involve depressing substitutions (spaghetti squash for pasta and/or tofu in place of sauces or fat just doesn't, doesn't cut it!) and against every odd taste good!

Food porn/recipe post forthcoming if I have the 1) time or 2) energy. For some reason I've been aching since yesterday and the running around town in the heat + exercise today has left me rather pleasantly tired, in that way one only feels after antics in the summer sun (or haze, as the case may be).
