didn't get to whoop people this weekend
Jan. 30th, 2005 07:59 pmI went to a self-defense course yesterday. You know, one of those one-day things that show the basics re: how to defend yourself from muggers and the like.
It was good, but by even the instructor's measure it fell short - the "padded person" that we were supposed to be able to practice on didn't show.
So, we had to practice knee-to-the-groin and eye pokes on each other - always coming up short so as not to inflict any real damage. Necessary but nerve wracking, as 1) I was always worried about hitting one of my classmates and 2) 1) is always your LAST concern if you're really assaulted. It's lousy practice if you have do it over and over while always stopping yourself!
But, I hadn't taken anything like that since college and I have to say it was helpful just to review the ideas and go through the paces again. My fear is always that if I ever were attacked I'd freeze and not do anything.
There was historic fencing practice today, but with the snow and ice I thought it better not to try and get out in it. Pity, because I've been kind of irritable all day, and it would have been nice to let out that aggression.
Worked on the PVC corset some more (sewed the side back panels wrong way around and had to recut them - that's the bitch about vinyl, you have to get it right the first time) and typed up some of my notes from various conventions and classes last year. Also started looking through study guides provided by D., as I realize I have no real study techniques or strategy to make stuff "stick".
I've also been writing a good deal - a "writing party" on one of my lists is spurring me to think quickly and type it out even faster. I've needed that kind of kick in the pants, I think!
Off to fold some laundry and watch some tv - I've been trying to enjoy Digging for the Truth (I'm a sucker for archaeology tv) but the host seems annoyingly clueless.
How sad is it that my LJ is devoted to television reviews?
