Dune=Iraq?
Jul. 29th, 2003 08:54 amWas having this discussion a few days ago and Googled "Dune Iraq" out of curiosity. It turns out that I am not alone. Nothing new here, indeed, the comparisons were thrown around before the war started, and Frank Herbert himself admitted that a lot of the story was inspired by Islam.
Not to trivialize international events, but the parallels are striking. War in a desert over a scarce resource, and our players are:
Padashah Emperor = Dubya & Co.
Sardukar = U.S. military and resources (back in the day the U.S. helped Iraq fight Iran, rather the way the Emperor loaned his troops to the Harkonnen)
Baron Harkonnen = Saddam Hussein (Uday and Qusay = Feyd and Rabban?)
The Guild = Halliburton
Fremen = the Iraqi people
and of course:
Spice = Oil
Except, of course, the Iraqi people don't seem to have a Maud'dib.
