After much searching decided that PVC piping was going to be impossible to find and time-consuming to make, so I opted for store-bought black satin piping - shiny without the expense/time.

Because I'll be safely snowed in tomorrow with no distractions, here is my plan of attack (in order):

  1. Attach muslin sleeve to muslin and check for movement/fit.
  2. Watch "The Ugly Truth" and other relevant episodes and take notes/sketches (1. can be done at the same time).
  3. Make changes to muslin based on 2.
  4. Complete muslin including seams, facing, and lining.
  5. Decide on colors/textures of vinyl to use based on episodes, available fabrics, and current wardrobe (no reason to limit this to only being worn with one thing!)
  6. Look up PVC in "Fabric Savvy" for best thread/interfacing/linings to use.
  7. Order fabric (ONLY after pattern has been finalized)

Today I went out and played in the snow - got haircut, pillaged grocery, behaved myself rather well at G Street (after successfully convincing myself that I don't NEED black neoprene).

I think I may be (shock!!) getting used to the whole "winter thing". Now that the folks in charge of snowplows and salt are prepared, the roads were fine even though there was light snow all day. I wasn't even that cold, which was a real surprise - I was very sure that it was nearly 40F, only to find out later that it's not been above freezing all day. I even thought it was kind of pretty, mostly because I wasn't stressing over how it was going to affect my commute. What a pleasant surprise!

Found "A Soldier's Viewpoint on Surviving Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Attacks" via Metafilter, and it's one of the most logical things I've read so far regarding how to EFFECTIVELY react should Something Bad(TM) happen. Douglas Adams was right - Don't Panic.
