It has been hellaciously hot for the past few days. I mean damn hot, real hot, "born on the sun" hot.

And I've been loving it!

But a thought occurred to me on the way home as I drove past the local community pool.

I've not been swimming in years. I think the last time was a trip to Ocean City with friends around 1997 or '98.

In addition to the community pool, we also have a pool in our complex. However, since becoming aware that people put rubber swim pants on their babies with the actual intent of putting un-housetrained infants in the pool, I've been reluctant to use a public pool - I don't want to get e. coli or baby dysentry or whatever other gunge peeing babies and other unwashed public bring into the water.

The ocean and other natural bodies of water bother me less - they're not part of closed, recycled water systems so I can comfortably delude myself that all the nasties wash away "out there" somewhere, take a handful of vitamins, and go about my business.

What I really miss is the opportunity to skinny-dip. I did exactly once as a teenager, when I was too young/drunk/ignorant to worry about the privacy and sanitation of public pools. It was fabulous, but age, sobriety, and awareness of the law/icky public pools has forever prevented my repeating the experience.

Hopefully one day I'll have a private indoor pool and can skinny dip whenever I like. Until that day comes I'll just have to keep my suit on and wait till I'm near a lake or river.
