Heard a review of this book while browsing the NPR archives today. "The Real World Aptitude Test" (RAT) is written in the same format as the SAT, only it "tests" on real world knowledge such as basic finances, cooking, sex, drugs and alcohol, home repair, etiquette, understanding/paying bills, etc. It's supposed to give kids leaving home for the first time some idea of what they have to be prepared for "out there". I was impressed enough by the interview with the author to get a copy to send to my cousin, who graduated high school last week.
It was interesting considering all of the things one "has" to know to survive on one's own. I know that when I went to college my parents had prepared me well on some fronts (home repair, personal finances, alcohol) but completely neglected others (sex, bill paying, cooking). I'm not going to whine about it now, but it would have been nice to have a book like this when I was in high school so I could have had an excuse to bounce some questions off my parents.
Hope this makes things a little clearer for my cousin and so he doesn't go through/put himself through some of the shit I had to figure out the hard way.
