Just got back from sewing circle down in Alexandria with G. and crew.

Lots of fun, but getting to and from is consistently a bitch. I always get lost on the million 1 way streets in Alexandria, so if I make a wrong turn once it's not like I can simply go back the way I came.

Also somehow ended up getting lost on the way back as well. Grr.....no matter how far I get away from my teenage years of paranoid driving and even more paranoid-about-driving parents, just as soon as I start to get really comfortable behind the wheel - even enjoying it, a tiny bit - I get lost or something else goes wrong to make me hate driving all over again.

At least now I know multiple routes to and from G.'s place, so maybe 3rd time's the charm and I won't get lost next month. Here's hoping...

I will need to start ideas for a costume to wear to the Time Traveler's Gala out at Costume College this summer, so I brainstormed ideas with the sewing circle. I'd really like to use my recently completed red brocade stays so we worked around that (that, and I need something to wear with them anyway).

Current ideas to roll around in my mind:

  • Shift/chemise, possibly with flared elbow length sleeves (think 18th C. length). To make it futuristic, consider textured fabric or ideally iridescent linen (assuming iridescent combinations that go with the stays are available - white/silver or white/gold would be perfect). G. did some sketches that I'm hanging on to, as she has done 18th c. clothing before and knows it much better than I do.

  • Work matador costume around the stays (thanks J.!). Several advantages - mobility and coverage (hotel ballrooms can get cold from A/C, even in a southern CA summer), lots of black white and red.

  • The Fortuny possibility keeps lingering in my mind, possibly with peacock feather colors or the actual feathers. This idea is still really not fleshed out, and would probably not involve the red stays.

  • Basic tailcoat with matching skirt/pants, but only if can be made in a timely manner and if the correct fabric is available.

  • Funky Regency still appeals to me but I'm not sure how I'd carry it off.

Just thinking out loud....I'm sure something more permanent will hit me between the eyes like a train once I stop dwelling on it....
