Well, that was easy :)

Turns out the hard part is finding felt blanks - assembly goes pretty quick. Fold it the way you like, tack the brim to the crown to make it stay (I used black thread; these directions suggest leather thong), iron it to set (steam makes the felt soft enough to manipulate by hand). My results:



If the blank's head opening is oval, make sure the corners are pointing where you want them to (in this case, center front & two at the sides)

In a festive mood - pins will leave a mark, this doesn't bother me because (let's say it together) hellooo - pirate!

Challenges: sewing in place. Definitely need thimble
What I'd do differently: no idea being first one and all

Looked at their site - I don't think they have theme days anymore. So ANYTIME is good - provided it's cool. The coat is fairly heavy!

I'll suggest one of the Oct. weekends as Sept. can still be warm. The only weekend that doesn't work for me is Oct. 8-9 as I'll be visiting my folks on Sat. and going with friends to the Pa. Ren Faire on that Sun. Any other weekend is fine.

As an aside, the Fall Fiber Festival at Montpeilier is Oct. 1-2. It's like a little sibling to Maryland Sheep and Wool. I'm thinking about going this year, as I've not gone in a bit. It's smaller and way less crowded than MSW.
