I'm accustomed to reading more than one book at a time. In an effort to make a dent in my backlog and have something on hand to suit every mood, I'm trying to keep one each of fiction, costume, and non-fiction by my bed. Today the combination is:

Fiction: Kushiel's Justice - haven't started yet as I just finished Mortal Companion (does this have a sequel? or will it?)

Costume: Women's Costume of the Near and Middle East: makes me want to make loose silk tunics and baggy trousers. I need to add to my "want to make" list the same way I need a fat hole in my head :P

Non-Fiction: Just finished Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (not the newest scholarship but a fairly solid, infuriating intro to the "Indian Wars" from the Native American perspective) and next up I'll either finish Understanding Fencing or start Infinite Variety: The Life and Legend of the Marchesa Casati. Or both - development of good fencing habits vs. extravagant eccentrics (hey! Tilda Swinton as Casati) makes them different enough to feed different moods.

What are you currently reading?

That looks really cool, especially the interactive aspects! Are you reading or participating as well?

Only reading. I got the book in Swedish for once, as in English is just as much translated, as the original is Russian.

So far it feels lovingly hardcore. :-)

I've not been reading as much as usual lately, but that's down to working on wardrobe expansion (which means I've been listening to radio shows instead). But I do have a few things on the go ... am nearly finished Brian Fagan's The First North Americans, and simultaneously partway into his Cro-Magnon (a great way to challenge the brain to keep straight what happened in what era and on which continent ... must be my inner masochist at work). My recently acquired children's poetry book didn't take me long, of course, but gave much pleasure. Today I've been reading through the historical and construction/technique portions of my newly acquired copies of Knitting Vintage Socks (which is all resurrected late Victorian/early 20th century patterns and methods) and Socks from the Toe Up (modern patterns by a designer responsible for multiple new heel construction techniques). Bedside reading is, as always, old favourites being re-read ... recently finished Randall Garrett's three Lord Darcy mystery books (Murder and Magic, Too Many Magicians, and Lord Darcy Investigates) and am now on Tom Holt's My Hero.

Trying to drum up enthusiasm to pick up my copy of The RDA Primer, but, since none of our clients have said anything about switching over to the new rules yet, it doesn't feel urgent ... ;p

I didn't know Fagan also wrote archaeological books - I might have to check them out as I've been so pleased with his climate work.

I gotta say, I know you love your job, but the "Primer" does look a bit, er, dry. Maybe mix it up with those novels?

Fagan's interest in palaeoclimatology grew out of his archaeological work ... he's written/edited quite a few books in the field. Finished "The First North Americans" yesterday ... quite a good overview of what's currently known about the original patterns of human population on the continent and the different eras/civilizations that followed.

This was the moistest source I could find ... at least it's only 89 pages. Once the new rules have been around for a bit, slightly more human-friendly works should start appearing ... right now it's all based on output of the original committee (which I am quite prepared to believe was made up of all the pompous twits that the rest of the cataloguers wanted out of the office for a while). ;p
