love me some documentaries

...and [livejournal.com profile] geekchick enlightened me to the existence of a whole bunch of 'em, free. Favorite pick so far: a 1977 UK documentary about the almost-unheard-of-in-the-US youth subculture northern soul. The accents are almost impenetrable and the dancing wildly athletic (opens YouTubey type video). Given how little I know about this flamboyant movement this coverage warms the cockles of my wannabe pop cultural historian heart :)

Surfing the del.icio.us "TV" tag ate up a huge amount of my day. =) Between Joost, Hulu, the networks themselves, and some of these other sites, I find myself missing having cable or broadcast tv much less than I otherwise might.

You've not read Bill Brewster's Last Night A DJ Saved My Life? Shock and horror! Shock. And. Horror. He devotes a few dozen pages to Northern Soul!

Yep, I've got it, though I confess it's been awhile - I could stand to reread it.

This video was the first time I saw their dance moves though - Ted Polhemus' "Streetstyle" has diagrams but stills != motion.
