article: local fencing

Courtesy [livejournal.com profile] geekchick: arts/"human interest" article on local clubs and why people fence. Yes, a lot of people pick it up after seeing a movie, and yes, experience and treachery often counts more than youth and exuberance ;)

I reserve comment about POTC's "perfect footwork" however...

Not perfect? Gee, 'splain, ok?

The person quoted in the article said that Depp/Bloom's footwork was perfect for saber.

I decline an authoritative comment because I'm not a sport sabreur, but I strongly suspect that they were trained in some kind of theatrical combat for POTC, and not a sport discipline. The footwork may be similar but I'd be surprised as hell if it's "perfect" for the modern fencing strip.

Of course, this is a perfect excuse to re watch the film and see what I can figure out :P

It would be interesting to find some sort of commentary on the fencing in the POTC series. Most of Johnny's training came from Don Juan De Marco, but we all know Orlando was well trained for LOTR. So... I s'pose it might actually be good footwork, after all, I guess?

Does the DVD have a commentary? I can do some surfing around and see if I read anything.

Their footwork is undoubtedly GOOD - just whether it's good for sport saber is open to debate!
