guess who's coming to dinner...

Blatantly stealing (and then modifying) this Question of the Day from Shakespeare's Sister, just because the comments were amusing:

What 5 television characters (not the actors, but the characters) would you want to have over for a dinner?

Bonus: What would you serve?

See, I think this is actually a trick question, because lots of the tv characters that amuse me on screen are not the sorts of people I want in my house. Think about it - would you want Dave Lister chewing his toenails at your table? doG forbid, I don't even wanna think about what Bernard Black would do. Even the reasonably sober and otherwise affable Malcolm Reynolds is known to get in fights at parties.

The latter is going to be a problem with almost any character from the shows I happen to watch because most of them are action oriented: can I institute a "no weapons at the table" rule (including sonic screwdrivers)?

In the interest of throwing a party where the guests might actually have something to talk about, the 5 I'd invite are: Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes ("Adventures of Sherlock Holmes", Granada TV) and House ("House M.D.") could get on each other's nerves while solving medical forensic cases, while Veronica Mars ("Veronica Mars") and Chloe Sullivan ("Smallville"), if they could snark the guys into acting nice, could team up with them to bring down more bad guys than Luthorcorp, the Neptune police department, and Moriarty combined.

They would of course be served their tea and cakes by Stephen Fry's Jeeves ("Jeeves and Wooster"), who, while he only appears to be a butler, is really in charge of the whole party, making suggestions and disapproving "Very good, sir/ma'am"s whenever the conversation gets particuarly heated.

Your turn. I'll allow book characters as well 'cos y'all are such a literate lot.

I love the idea of Jeeves serving House....on so many different levels.

I would invite Captain Jack Harkness from Doctor Who/torchwood and Sherlock Holmes ala Jeremy Brett becasue it would be so much fun to see whose head explodes first. Holmes who is used to reading people in 30 seconds flat or Capt. Jack who is used to obfuscating and blending in.

I would also invite Aeryn Sun from Farscape and Buffy the Vampire Slayer to watch the kick-ass female bonding.

These two would also have the benefit of additionally challenging Holmes's pre-conceived notions of who people are and making Jack wonder how many of the others he could get into bed and in what combinations.

For my fifth I would have Doc Holiday ala Val Kilmer to sit back and make catty/witty remarks about the situation. Just no card games, please!

Yes, Holmes and Harkness - the "figuring out" circle would NEVER end!

And almost all of the characters would likely break Holmes' brain..

I love the idea of Jeeves serving House....on so many different levels.

My brain is so atrophied from sewing that I only just now caught this upon rereading!

Yeah, Jeeves and Wooster scream slash, but converting Wooster to House is just twisted!

That's okay. I forgive you.

Hmmmm ... a knotty one. 'cause that's a very good point about not wanting some of 'em in your home; Robbie Coltrane's Fitz from "Cracker" for instance ... fascinating and sexy man if he's sober and likes you, but would drink all the booze, fill your house with cigarette smoke, and piss off all the other guests just so he could feel superior for a while.

So ... in the interest of conversation, while also risking a fair amount of food throwing ...

Diana Trent from Waiting for God: I've wanted to be Diana when/if I ever grow up ever since I saw my first episode of this show (if you're not familiar with the character, a cruise through the "memorable quotes" at the link will teach you Diana 101).

Oliver from Oliver's Travels: the only screen character that I wanted to take home and keep as a pet practically at first sight 'cause he's such a darling (as well as being a knower of many quirky things and a teller of marvelous jokes)

Nick and Nora Charles of The Thin Man: gotta have the set rather than just or the other ... consummate entertainers who can find a way to enjoy the company of just about anyone.

And number five ... a coin toss between Neverwhere's Marquis de Carabas and The Assassination Bureau's Ivan Dragomiloff ... would just depend which one was taking a night off from mayhem and skullduggery and thus was free to simultaneously charm and pokle at the other guests. :p

Oop ... didn't clue into the "television" bit and just picked screen in general. In that case, Dragomiloff is out and the Marquis is in.

And to replace the Nick and Nora ...

Oooo ... gotta have Buddy Cole!

And Firefly's River Tam, 'cause anything she said would keep all the others in full flow, and it's not a bad idea to have somebody around who can keep a mental eye on what those characters really have on their minds. ;-)

Hell, include movie characters - widens the circle of possibilities.

Adding River would be excellent because she'll say almost anything. Cracker.... well, the conversation would be GREAT but yeah, the smoke and arrogance thing.

Then I stick with my first list ... Nick and Nora are fun, both in the original novel and the first movie (then again, any Powell and Loy team-up characters are people you wanna be around ***grin***)

Hmmm ... now you've got imagining River and Fitz locked in a room together ... my money says it would take weeks, but Fitz would end up first in a foetal position and sobbing. :p
