PSA: Serenity Now/Equality Now

Courtesy of D. and [livejournal.com profile] betnoir: Big Damn Movie, Big Damn Benefits. No showings in my neck of the woods (yet?), but might be in yours (I'm looking at you, [livejournal.com profile] hadesgirl/[livejournal.com profile] semmie17). And it's for a good cause!

Also possible embryonic plans discussed over at [livejournal.com profile] fireflyfans. Have not joined this community myself as it seems awfully busy/too great a time suck to have on my friends page.

Edit 6:25 pm: Others have pointed out, there is indeed a screening in my neck of the woods. Cursed by my speed-reading yet again.

So, er, anyone?

Arlington, VA isn't that far. :)

But, yes, that does look fun.

See update. Yes, I read too fast - I saw that as "Arlington TX" - not sure why.

Gonna go?

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 11:51 am (UTC)(link)
Thinkin' about it - usually whether or not to go to movies is a last-minute decision for me, but yeah.

You?

[identity profile] zen4me.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 11:55 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'd like to go. It'd be worthwhile and I love the movie. The ACD isn't too bad either.

Maybe get a group together?

I have a friend coming into town on/about that weekend; once I know more about her schedule (and whether she'd like to go if she's here) I'll make a decision, and if I CAN go, I'd be happy to get a group together :)

[identity profile] zen4me.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 10:18 pm (UTC)(link)
cool, let me know. :)

[identity profile] anotheranon.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Mind, I haven't a thing to wear! Well, nothing special, anyway - given my other responsibilities pulling together a Firefly costume in 2 weeks seems unlikely :P

Question

[identity profile] royalbadness319.livejournal.com 2006-06-02 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I need a bit of help, I've been palnning on making a Hussar styled jacket for some time now, but I don't know where to begin, I read your webpage and saw you were making one, any tips, pictures, patterns?
I'd really appreciate any help!

Thanks, Tyler

Hi there, and welcome aboard :)

Can you give me some information regarding the type of Hussar jacket you'd like to make (picture, screen cap - ?) I'd also like to know more about your level of sewing experience before I start making recommendations.

Disclaimer: my own project is on indefinite hold due to lack of funds, but I did do some groundwork (as you saw at the site).

well, as for the jacket, I'm modeling mine after Adam Ant and as for sewing, none, absolutely none, hahaha, but I am among people who are quite experienced.

Ack - I apologize for not getting back to you!

What I would suggest is that if you are new to sewing, you need to find a jacket pattern - a fairly simple one, by one of the "Big Three" pattern companies (Simplicity, Butterick, or McCalls) - that you like and that resembles the Hussar Jacket (key style points: no lapels, stand-up collar, straight front opening and even hem all the way around).

Have a friend take your measurements to make sure you start with the correct size.

Cut the pattern out of cheap (muslin or dollar-bin woven) fabric at the size that fits your largest measurement (either your chest/bust [you haven't said whether you're male or female], waist, or hips). Try it on and see if it fits and moves the way you like.

This would be a good place to start. If it's not fitting correctly you will likely need some help fitting it - very regrettably there are some sewing tasks that are difficult if not impossible to do on your own!

Do you know anyone in person who can help you with this? It is hard to give advice sight-unseen!

I'm male, and was hoping I could alter an exsisting jacket, what would a similar style be?

Re: Question

If you're looking for an existing jacket, I would suggest checking military surplus shops and/or vendors of uniforms for a "Mao jacket" or similar - ideally you want something with the style points I described above (standing collar, straight open front, etc.). If it's the right shape, the main alteration will be embellishment, which is more straightforward but more time consuming than construction: you'll want to sew on the gold braid (check your local fabric store or online vendors like CheepTrims (http://www.cheeptrims.com/) for braid, and you're going to need a LOT of it) by hand to ensure that goes on in loops/whirls that you want.

Regrettably, home sewing resources for men are few and far between because it's traditionally assumed that sewing/costuming is a woman's hobby - this is sad because there are some really fantastic costuming guys out there (see my posting archives for Sith Camaro, "Dark Lord and Tailor" - if he has contact info he might have better tips than I about fitting to a man's measurements).

If you do end up having to make a jacket, I'd recommend checking the "big three" pattern company's costume/Halloween pattern section; Simplicity in particular has some good men's patterns for Civil War uniforms that might be adaptable.

Do let me know what you end up creating (post pictures if you can!) If you can get the Adam Ant jacket to work for you I'll be so jealous!

thanks for the help, I'll try my hardest to make it work.

I am sooo there. In lieu of a Firefly-inspired costume, can I just bring a Big Damn water gun?

Oh yes - bring an arsenal of plastic "Vera"s!
