**fume**

I was just getting back from getting my hair cut - good mood, pretty day - when I saw a knot of protestors outside the local naval hospital.

It looked to be a protest/counter protest between veteran supporters and "Rev." Phelps "God Hates F*gs" idiots. There were a lot of police around, (to protect the protesters from each other?) and a lot of resultant traffic - I was greeted to the sight of someone with a "God Hates You" sign while a commuter somewhere behind me blasted Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes" on his stereo - how's that for incongruity ("Don't drink, don't smoke, what do ya do?")?

Needless to say I'm not overly pleased that that poisonous bastard has his people in my neck of the woods and even though I've seen it on TV a dozen times it's still jarring to see people who want to spend a beautiful day like this spouting hatred for no apparent reason (yeah yeah, I know the reasons - fear and excessive devotion to "religious" dogma).

I really didn't need to see that today. I was pleased however that the veteran supporters were there in equal numbers.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find it odd that their protesting outside a military facility? Were they protesting the Iraq war or homosexuality? I know this may seem like an odd question, but if you ask people in the military, most of them will say there are no gays in the military. (Yes, I know there ARE. Military personnel just vehemently deny it.)

Phelps' line is that God is punishing the United States for tolerating homosexuality (because of course being the center of the universe God would take an active interest in America. :\ ) therefore the celebration of military deaths and such hateful signs as "Thank God for IEDs". Of course, the hurricane was also part of God's judgement, because hurricanes only destroy the homes of sinners, at least according to Pat Robertson, and they also celebrated the death of coal miners - - basically any kind of disaster is a chance for the Phelps family - - his church is primarily made up of his relatives - - to crow and strut about how much God apparantly hates everyone except for the Phelps family.

There is no reasoning with people like this, who revel in the intolerance, ignorance and hate that is so antithetical to the core teachings of Christianity - - yet they call themselves Christians. These are the kinds of people that give all religion a bad name. :(

Okay, that makes more sense now. Thanks. And you are right -- they are the ones that give any religion a bad name. *shaking head*
