Been shoppin' </monty python voice>
Objectives: get some "grown-up" clothes suitable for work and weekend that don't cost a fortune and aren't a rehash of things I already have (i.e., another black pair of pants, another hoodie of any description). I think I did awfully well.
Out of curiosity and with respect to L.'s recommendation and![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
geekchick's reservations, I made my first stop at H&M.
I was impressed :) The fabrications were pretty good (natural fibers!) and the selections were quite slick without being so hyper-fashionable that I can't wear it to work. I was also pleased to see that they offer larger sizes (up to 16), when so many other fashion forward shops seem to neglect anything larger than an 8 :P
For some reason the "shrunken" jackets that seem to be popular fit me really well, so I picked up three - one black military-type cotton, one snowflake black and white tweed (I lurve tweed!) and one in a green plaid (!) These go with jeans, skirts, etc. Go me :)
Meandered around the mall and the only other thing I picked up were a pair of straight leg jeans at the Levi's store. I like Levis because they consistently make girl jeans that fit me (and their men's don't hang half bad either) and don't fall apart in the wash. I have mostly "boot cut" jeans so this is a change.
No luck on t-shirts - the few I found were too sheer to wear to work. I think this will have to be a Target thing.
Next hit: Anthropologie. Wonderfully unique selection but I can seldom afford. Having said this, if you have time to prowl the sale rack, there are finds to be had! Picked up yet another blazer/thing (I hesitate to call it a suit jacket because no lapels, collar, etc. - beautiful dark mahogany/purple with exotic detailing. Me likes). Also a pair of loose grey trousers that came with a beautiful grey-green embroidered scarf as a belt. It's a color that looks terrible near my face, so I'll stick with lower down :)
DSW revealed only one pair of anything I really liked, mid-calf black stretch "suede" boots with dangerous pointy toes but not-too-dangerous 2" heels. Surprisingly comfortable and will look good with skirts.
Filene's - didn't find much I really needed, and probably would have left empty handed had it not been raining. I impulse-bought a fake-suede fedora - not terrifically flattering, but wearing a hat is easier than carrying an umbrella and fedoras hold that romantic 1940s glamor/Indiana Jones adventurous connotation for me, so...
As usual, some of the new line of toys are to my liking, others aren't. Like: all the dark purple and teal green, the fitted jackets, straight leg trousers/pants, mostly because I think they look good on me. Don't really like: blouson shirts because I'm cautious about anything that makes my shoulders look bigger, and pants of any length other than ankle because I can't figure out what shoes to wear.
Speaking of shoes - wedges seem to be the height of fashion, but I just can't get into it - my mind's eye always sees the wretchedly ugly 1970s versions, paired with loose, stiff denim jumpers like my kindergarten teachers wore. Not a dis on denim jumper wearers or wedge fans, but the mental image forbids me finding wedges attractive.
One thing I am seeing that I like are these boots with decorative straps that remind me of Vivienne Westwood's early 80's Pirates collection (compare original with budget versions), but I am admittedly a sucker for anything Westwoodish :P And they would look awfully good with straight leg jeans tucked in....Target version? Maybe.
