big bada boom

Just got power back after an extremely loud and prolonged thunderclap (~20 seconds) that resulted in the electricity being out these past 2 hours.

I can't find any news on what may have happened, but I've never experienced thunder like that - I figure either lightning struck in our parking lot or there were a lot of strikes, one after another, somewhere else (I'm guessing the latter as there is no crater in my space) :P

My guess is that part of the thunderclap was a transformer giving up the ghost -- I've only been around one that failed spectacularly, but... wow.

Yeah - spectacular is right. I had one blow about a block away one night and it took me an hour to scrape myself off the bedroom ceiling.

They blow up real purty, though - - saw one hit by lightning and it produced a very impressive white-violet ball of flame.

Been near a transformer blow and w/ in 100 feet of 2 lightening strikes. Both are incredibly loud. I'm glad you didn't have any appliances go--it does happen.

Lost no appliances; gratefully D. has surge protectors on all the computers.

Sounds as if it was a good night NOT to be outside with a sword. :p

Very much so! Somehow I don't think I could really pull that "Highlander" thing...
