fencing and other things

Did well again at fencing - out of 5 bouts, won 3 (!) Beautiful drive home; it stormed earlier so it's a cool, clear night. Ahhhh :)

One of the fencers who started with A. (~12 years ago) was there and critiqued my style, and rightly so: I still have a bad habit of making shallow lunges and leaning forward to make up the distance, exposing my shoulder to an almost certain hit by the other fencer.

This is an extension of my life-long bad habit of lousy posture - head too far forward, slumping in my chair, etc. This was exacerbated this spring with my eyesight problems which caused me to lean towards my monitor at work. I'm not as bad as I used to be, but clearly I need to work on this more - maybe I should just wear my Regency stays for a week and see if it helps! :P

Other goodies: jury duty short today, commute not hellish. Had time to play futile FAQ games on Comcast's site in an attempt to discover why I'm subbed to both basic and preferred cable, if there's a difference, and can I get rid of one or the other to save $. Looks like I'll have to pick up the phone...

I'm also taking a short break from the hussar project because I want to really make something. I've been sitting on some cotton with a ukiyo-e-style print for two years; and does this ex-goth/indie/punk/something chick have any black cotton for trim in my fabric stash? Of course I do! So this should be a short easy one to get some instant gratification going before I crack open the pattern-drafting book again :) Both fabrics are currently pre-shrinking in the dryer.

Book update: Book 2 of the Coldfire Trilogy ("When True Night Falls") is far more involving than the first. I love it when writers can make Amityville look so much like Mayberry ;) I'm up to the weapons inspections in "Plan of Attack" - Franks asks for swift buildup of troops in the Gulf; Wolfowitz wants to dribble out the deployment, you know the drill.

Time to shower and sleep but first take one more stab at finding the one unread message that Gmail says I have - the threading of conversations is hiding it, so if you've mailed and I've not replied, send again!
