art of tarot

I have a thing about Tarot decks. Not that I believe that they work, or that I even know that much about how to read them, but I admire a good-looking tarot deck when I see one. I think it's the idea of variations on a theme that appeals to me, a unified set of the same design.

I just thought of this today, when I ran across links to the '80's deck and the vampire deck. Not as artistically sound, but I admire it for the cheez factor, there's the Hello Kitty deck.

I only own a few, mostly acquired as gifts over the years. I got the standard Rider-Waite when I was 12 from my grandmother (or was it my parents? At any rate, they would have had to ask my grandmother where to find such a thing), and the James Bond deck as a souvenir from my mom at some point.

The only one I broke down and got for myself was the gorgeous Vertigo deck - Dave McKean's photgraphy/artwork is lovely, and besides, the death card really is Death (the Sandman).

I only ever pull these out around Halloween.

I want the hello kitty deck!

I also got the Vertigo deck and it's the only one I've had. I've had it forever, but only really looked at it and never used it. I also want the Dali Deck (but I couldn't find a good link to pictures from it).

Ooooh.. Dali deck! (http://www.aeclectic.net/dali/index.html) (yeah, not GREAT pictures, but there they are).

Of all artists, he'd be the one to design one.. Thank you for telling me about this one!

You know , that's wierd...I too picked up the vertigo deck earlier this year because I'd fallen in love with the artwork...yet I never use it. I'm a sucker for tarot decks too. My favorites are the Medieval Scapini, Sforza-Visconti, Shakespeare and Celtic Tarot. Of them all, whenever I do pull them out I end up using Robin Wood's deck. Go figure...

One deck I've been on the fence about for a long time is the Giger (Baphomet) deck. I love it, but it manages to squick me a bit at the same time.

I think you showed me that! It was cute! For some reason, I remember each card being on black and white card like a coloring book... is it?

Mmmmm.. coloring books...

There's actually a good Hallowe'en deck out there too (my sweetie has a copy, it's beautiful and has many cats).
