I'm back and I'm bad!

At long last! Reconnected to the internet with a real keyboard so I can type something of substance!

Let me 'splain. No, there is too much. Let me sum up:

The move:
  • If it wasn't the hottest day of the year, it sure felt like it!

  • Morning to night, both of us on little sleep/less food. Gnawed alive by mosquitoes for the first time in forever.

  • Glad we built in "buffer days" where we could go back to the old place - we were piqued that the movers didn't move everything, and I think we were both annoyed that we hadn't purged more effectively before the moving date!

Post-move:

  • Cats adapted surprisingly fast! After one angry day locked up in the bathroom, Spice discovered a guest room with a window and happily "parked" for a good long while. Kisia, being the Big Cat, had to "patrol" the new space for 2 days before she relaxed into her old habits.
    • Neighbor cat outside the porch door was NOT well received by Spice.

  • Furniture: got heavenly leather recliners and a bedroom suite - our first proper headboard and non-particle board furniture, ever. As I type I'm waiting for delivery of another piece for the living room. We're spending a pretty penny, but the aim is that we'll never have to buy furniture EVER AGAIN.

  • Fantasy library: currently a large pile of boxes. Bookcases are on special order (see: buy once, save later) and we're impatient for them to arrive as we'd like less clutter and more reading material. I think I could stand to have the housewarming once the library is in order.

  • Still tons o' empty boxes; D. took the bulk of them to recycling yesterday but that's not the end of it. Given that we didn't get rid of enough stuff before the move we're purging as we unpack.

  • Needless to say, it took us awhile to get internet connectivity. A certain company that shall remain nameless is the only local provider of fiber optic, high speed connections, and evidently takes advantage of their monopoly by providing some of the laziest customer service I've ever seen.

  • The park in the fall is just about perfect :)

Post-post-move:

  • Post move stress got to me and I came down with fever and body aches that felt like I'd been hit like a truck :( Given the lack of respiratory symptoms, I'm guessing a brief bout with West Nile. The ick passed in a couple of days, but my energy is still somewhat impacted :( Which isn't optimal because:

  • Competition season is heating up! Been biting off more than I can chew all summer so I'm doing a tidy E and under tomorrow and a C and under regional competition next weekend.

    • Did a memorial team competition for a club member on the first of September. We thought she would have approved of the camaraderie and food, and it was agreed that we should do a team event again... but not for the same reason :/

  • Determined to stop being a slacker and go to all the things I talk about doing. See: Revealing the African Presence in Renaissance Europe, both renn faires, and a Fortuny interiors talk, among others.

And because I was still able to do abbreviated browsing, I found:
  • New style idol Esther Quek - even on a tiny screen I could tell she rocks the menswear HER way. I gotta know where she gets her ties - the only ones I've found are too wide/long for me. Hive mind?

  • The economies of bespoke tailoring - I find it sad that bespoke tailors can't afford their own work, as IMHO craftsmanship of this kind is motivated by love more than money.

  • 458 Full John Peel Shows Hit Soundcloud (HT [livejournal.com profile] nminusone; the set is taken down but individual shows are still searchable) - guess what I've been listening to for the past 2 weeks?

  • Make Love Not Porn - the name is guaranteed to trip your work firewalls, but the content isn't: far from being anti-porn, the site emphasizes knowing the difference between real sex and what goes on in porn films. In a country with poor sexual education, I think this is valuable.

Biggest thing upcoming is my Mom and sister are visiting the first weekend of October to see the new house and roadtrip to Philly. J. and I are going to see Adam Ant on his first US tour in ~15 years (awesome or cheesy, it is something we can do together) followed by sightseeing. I'm making a bicorn hat to wear to the show, because if there's anytime to bust out piratey costume outside faire, it's gonna be this show :P
