It looks like Google Instant is definitely heading for fail. Put in "homosexual" and all the "instant" results are either medical sites or religious anti-gay sites. "Gay" seems to exist only in the context of the phrase "gay marriage". Looking at the FAQ for instant search, they note "autocomplete excludes certain terms related to pornography, violence and hate speech".

Although, amusingly, the search terms "gay lesbian" gets all sorts of results relating to cultural events while the search terms "lesbian gay" gets the same blank screen that "lesbian' alone gets.

[livejournal.com profile] rm points out (http://rm.livejournal.com/1922536.html) that if Instant is excluding "incendiary" sites, it may well be because so much porn for straight guys involves bisexual/lesbian women. Which is a damn shame, because bisexuals and lesbians themselves aren't pornographic by their mere existence!

FWIW, I was just playing with Instant and am not super impressed - if the only thing it does is show results as I type I don't see how this is a real customer service improvement over just hitting "enter". Seems more like a "neat programming trick" for show.
