work in progress: vest

Again raiding the fabric stash, this time a beautiful synthetic (probably?) brocade that I forgot I had:

Vest on dress mold

brocade detail

Compared to most of my recent projects that involve drafting the pattern from scratch and sewing by hand, this really has been an "instant gratification" project: Saturday I fitted the muslin; cut out the fashion fabric Sunday and have been assembling by machine on and off all week. Now I'm basting the lining in place and I'll hand sew it over the weekend.

I did make some changes to the original halter-top version pattern - I have a shorter torso so I cut my draft pattern in half and shortened it by around 1/2"; the back hit my shoulders strangely so I cut it about an inch lower, and the fabric is so thick that the welts look awful so I'll likely leave them off.

I'm thinking this will be suitable for a dramatic touch to work attire or as possible steampunkery - I'm not too worried about the inevitable historical inaccuracies.

More photos when complete.

I pawed through the stash tonight in prep for making a bunch of vests in the next week - figure I'll cut them all out at once and I'll have something to do during my Winter Olympic Geekfest. Using a Butterick multi-style pattern and brocade/velvet leftovers for music gigs and semi-steam. Also using this as a warmup for a couple of dress-up corsets.

Gorgeous! I adore brocade (and other fancy fabrics) vests. :-)
