Progress: Firefly vest
Got the first draft of the pattern and muslin done over the weekend.
The character Zoey wearing the vest and the same object on a mannequin. Both photos are from Joss Whedon's Firefly: The Official Visual Companion, Volume 1.
Notes on the original - real leather, appears brown, orange, or maroon depending on the photo. Fairly simple design, though the insets at front instead of darts are a nice touch.
My version is going to be in maroon PVC altered (in some as-yet-undecided way) to look more like leather - initial brainstorming came to naught as abrasion + dye didn't work because the dye won't stick to the white synthetic backing. I'm looking at brown paint or varnish next, to add depth.
These first pattern pieces are based on a body block I did about 5 years ago, so we'll see how well they fit! I chose princess seams for the back as it is similar construction to the front, and I suspect PVC may not take darts well.
First draft of the front with PVC fabric swatch. It seems to fit ok so far.
Next step: putting front and back together and trying on, and seeing how well I can fit things on myself with minimal assistance :P
