playing in the mud

No, not a multi-user dungeon, just a breathtakingly slow internet connection :P This has been going on since last night; I don't remember it being THIS bad when I was on (shudder) 9600 bps back in the day!

Fortunately, this did give me the the chance to spend some time away from the computer. I finally got away from the sampler and started embroidering my "upper class" partlet with a entwined acorn pattern. I also hammered out some writing, which is slowly getting to my writing groups.

I am still struggling with "Decline of the Third Republic". I'm finding that beyond a certain level of difficulty, my tendency to speed-read leaves me with absolutely no retention. Normally I just re-read stuff (sometimes years later, and repeatedly), but I'd like for this to "stick" the first time. I've tried sounding out each word in my head to slow myself down, but it's maddening as hell!! If anyone has any tips for how NOT to speed read, I'd be glad to hear them!

The weather has finally turned cooler, not even hitting 80F today. I opened the windows and let in the fresh air, scented with tree bark and cut grass - I've missed it. I think I'm going to enjoy this fall in spite of myself!

Tomorrow is Labor Day - NO WORK! May try and hit the museums but more likely I'll try and read.
