linkage - most fencing, one not

Compare and contrast: Martial arts take a Western turn (check out the list of schools in the sidebar!) and King Arthur’s court meets Prince George’s County (with extra pictures). Taken together these two articles help explain the differences between Western Martial Arts (WMA) and SCA fighting - principally that the former focuses on historical accuracy and the latter is just one part of a wider interest in all things medieval (though the SCA is building a place for historic fencing research in their Arts and Sciences section).

Only beef - WMA didn't "[die] out in Europe in the 1600s" - it just evolved into dueling (rather than martial) weapons, and then into sport fencing.

Related: the Association for Historical Fencing's Historical Fencing Translation Project, 'cos those old texts aren't going to translate themselves!

Finally, Elizabeth I's New Year's Gifts rolls website - not fencing related at all, but certainly historic, it's more useful for costuming/16th century luxury goods info.

Gacked from [livejournal.com profile] geekchick, 'cos I'm aware of the distinct fencing bent this journal has taken:

Everyone has things they blog about. Everyone has things they don't blog about. Challenge me out of my comfort zone by telling me something I don't blog about, but you'd like to hear about, and I'll write a post about it. Ask for anything: latest movie watched, last book read, political leanings, thoughts on slash, favorite type of underwear, writing techniques etc. Repost in your own journal so that we can all learn more about each other.
