note to virus

Alrighty then.

Just when you had me lulled into a false sense of security - even feeling, comparatively speaking, really well, this morning, you decide to throw down both the drips AND stuffies at once during fencing practice.

ESPECIALLY today when you had to know I was going to pick up my new shiny (without ring, from here), you compounded that insult by causing sinus pressure enough to make my eyes tear up.

That's just not sporting!

But then, I guess rhinovirii don't have much sense of honor, do they, hmm?

The duel is on. I'm pulling out the echinacea, dammit. Don't say you weren't warned!

historic links and a resolution or two

1652 English hot chocolate recipe - tried a cup based on this and the cinnamon and cloves make it smokier and spicier than the modern version (and the cayenne doesn't hurt). Pointed out by Shem by way of her friend J., whose sweet tooth was cruising the Folger site.

Thieves' cant - [livejournal.com profile] dotheranon put me on the scent but I found this transcription of a 1736 dictionary on my own. It dovetails nicely with my reading about the Elizabethan underworld - I was getting a vague understanding of what upright-men and gulls were from context but a dictionary saves so much time.

Not really solid resolutions but definitely good ideas I need to pursue:

  1. Eat more green vegetables
  2. Save more $
  3. Give at least once a month to a charity (January will be Equality Now)
  4. Find a convenient place to give blood, and do it.

only one thing tastes like bacon....

Oh, you are kidding me!

Also this, for a quadruple take - my gut says it's an insult to both the cookie and the bacon involved.

Surely these are signs of the apocalypse...
