the weekend

Was a good one.

I've been sewing like a maniac on the duster - I am astounded that I do not dream of parallel diagonal lines, but I'm sure that's coming. I love and hate projects like this at the same time - I love how they engage the mind so fully and so clearly, but I hate how they are so all-consuming that all other creative activity is put on hold.

D. and I had a "date night" with italian food and X-Men last night. We hadn't done anything "special" like that in awhile and it was good to set aside that time. D. even lit candles - it was very romantic :):) (yes, X-Men is a romantic movie. It is a measure of mine and D.'s compatability that this is blazingly obvious - we are nrrds :P)

Went with [livejournal.com profile] geekchick to the Freer today to see a fashion show of traditional (and not so traditional) kimono. The craftsmanship and detail was mightily impressive, and the construction is deceptively simple - just tying the obi looks like an adventure in and of itself. I'm thinking of bugging G Street to offer that shibori tie-dyeing/pleating class again, as I'd love to at least attempt some of the embellishment I saw today.

It was a beautiful day but still a bit chilly, the sort of weather where you almost need a jacket but you'll definitely be too hot if you wear it. The gardens behind the Smithsonian Castle are in bloom, also perfectly - enough to look nice but not so much that there is pollen everywhere.

Apart from a couple of visits to news.google.com, I took a break from war news for the weekend - I will probably catch up on it all tomorrow, if there is anything to catch up on - I am finding that this war involves a lot of action followed by long periods of nothing, which the news sources take advantage of with speculation and "armchair general"-ing. I have avoided watching live coverage on CNN because I don't want to see the explosions live. I do want to know what is happening though, and am hoping this is being done as precisely, quickly, and cleanly as can be.

Now I'm working on a nice headache from leaning over the sewing machine and need to get to bed anyway.
